Ballaghkeene National School works in partnership with others such as; Pupils, Parents and the Local Community to help promote a physically active school community. Some of our partnerships are listed below:
· Oulart the Ballagh GAA – we have a very strong school-club link with our local GAA club. We have volunteers who help out with hurling 365 and are very lucky to receive visits from the hurling and camogie teams when they are victorious in local success. We are also very lucky to have the clubs Games Promotion Officer James Donoghue who comes to the school on a weekly basis to help us develop lots of our fundamental movements and teach us how to play some of the Gaelic games. · Wexford GAA- we have coaches from Wexford GAA who come out and do termly blocks of lessons with various classes to help children learn basic skills needed for Gaelic games and encourage the sport among them. (Unfortunately due to COVID restrictions this year we haven't been able to avail of this fantastic resource but we will hopefully continue once again when restrictions allow.) · Hurling 365- hurling 365 takes place every Wednesday morning from 8am to 8.50am. It invites students from Junior Infants right up to 6th class to come along and take part in the activities to help improve their fundamental skills and also their basic GAA skills. It is run by volunteers from the local GAA club, Parents and School Staff. (Unfortunately due to COVID restrictions this year we haven't been able to run this project but we will hopefully continue once again when restrictions allow.) · Super Troopers – All our pupils receive a Super Troopers journal during the month of June which gives them Active homework each night. Pupils are encouraged to do the activity each night as part of their Active homework. · Active Flag Committee – Our Active Flag Committee is combined of pupils from 3rd-6th class. Pupils are given various roles and tasks to carry out throughout the school year such as making announcements at assembly, giving messages to the classrooms on various initiatives, designing posters for the school, carrying out surveys etc. Our pupils play a very important role in organising and delivering our Active Flag initiatives. · WOW Wall – The school has a ‘Wow Wall’ outside the office in the main hallway where it takes pride of place and visible to all. This wall contains pictures of different children and displays their achievements both inside and outside of school in the many and varied activities they get up to such as Irish Dancing, Boxing, Darts, Gymnastics etc.
Teachers Vs Students Challenges
Wexford GAA's Davy Fitzgerald, challenged all the schools in Wexford to see who is the 'Fittest School'? Here at Ballaghkeene NS we decided to take on the challenge along with the help of our students. We started some Teacher Vs Students challenges to help us prepare for the upcoming event on May 29th 2021. We have had some very tough challenges to date, such as 'Backs Against the Wall', 'Standing on one leg balance' and 'Hang Tough' and a very competitive 'Obstacle Course'. All the students here at Ballaghkeene NS have been putting up some great competition against our Teacher Team of: Mr Nolan, Ms Wright, Ms L Sinnott and Ms Byrne. A big thanks must go to Ms. Wright who organised all the challenges for us.
Check out some photos of our excellent teachers in action from the day of the event. They were put through their paces by Wexford's Davy Fitzgerald and had to complete 3 different events: Box Step Ups, Hang Tough and an Obstacle course. They did all the staff and students of Ballaghkeene N.S proud. Well Done!
